Monsters and the Site
by The Meehan
Hunter, like most White Wolf Storyteller games, is supposed to be an incredibly subjective
world, and to that end, the writers have been careful to NOT use any standard method of
describing how the supernatural appear to Hunters while using the Second Sight or one of the
Perception edges. The guidance the main rulebook and the Storyteller's Handbook provide is
limited at best, for just that reason. In fact, HSH encourages a ST to confuse matters
further be emphasizing that neither the Sight nor the Perception edges are exclusively,
dominantly, or dependably visual for any Hunter. A hunter using Discern may see a piece of
decaying flesh fall from one zombie while smelling the charnel stench of another.
In fact, a ST is encouraged to make Monster appearances as confusing as possible
(a belief and a stance I also share).
One key distinction that many players and STs lose in the inconclusiveness of Second Sight.
It should never be able to be used to determine what kind of Monster the hunter is
perceiving. That hard information should only be available through the Perception edges,
and only after a character has acquired a certain familiarity with the edge. STs are
encouraged to read the Hunter Storyteller's Handbook and the Official Hunter List OOC FAQ
for more details, and to be as inventive, confusing, and vague as possible.
For those who don't feel up to the task, I've put together a starting table a character's
possible appearance to the Second Sight and the Perception edges. I encourage you to modify
it.
